The effects of The English Civil War 

When the English Civil War broke out Oliver Cromwell beheaded Charles the I, in result it turned England into a commonwealth. Cromwell began ruling England from 1649 to 1658. During this time period he dismissed parliament. Under his military dictatorship puritans ruled very cruelly, making them not favored by the people. Consequently when Cromwell died many people were happy. Connecting this to how it may have affected the philosophy of John Locke and Thomas Hobbes, both philosophers agree that a higher power or a ruler was needed to enforce the peace and justice in the society. Although they had different perceptions of the amount of power this leader should have they both knew a sovereign was necessary
